OpenAI Pulls the Plug on Sora as Costs and Safety Concerns Mount
March 26, 2026

OpenAI has discontinued Sora, its short-form generative video app, less than a year after launch. The platform, which generated viral clips from text prompts, faced steep compute and storage costs, falling user retention, and growing moderation and legal challenges tied to realistic depictions of public figures and copyrighted characters. Reuters reported the company cited heavy infrastructure and moderation burdens as central reasons for the closure.

Analysts said the shutdown reflects a strategic pivot toward enterprise products and research with clearer monetization. KeyBanc noted Sora failed to convert early downloads into sustained monthly active users, while Wall Street commentators argued that novelty alone does not create a sustainable social product. Media and legal experts highlighted the need for stronger provenance, watermarking and consent frameworks before scaling consumer-facing generative video. Reports also indicate ongoing but unsettled licensing discussions with studios left some partners surprised.

OpenAI said it will provide guidance for preserving user creations. Observers expect the industry to emphasize safety infrastructure, IP safeguards and enterprise integrations over standalone consumer video apps in the near term.
